SOLAR THERMAL - HEATING WATER

Solar Hot Water Introduction

Solar Thermal panels use the sun's energy to indirectly heat the water in a hot water storage tank which then supplies your hot water taps, shower heads etc.

How does Solar Thermal work?

  • Roof mounted Solar panels collect daylight energy to heat a fluid (Glycol) in a closed circuit
  • The glycol is pumped through a heat exchanger in a hot water storage cylinder
  • Mains fed cold water is supplied to the hot water cylinder and pre-heated by the heat exchanger
  • If required, your existing boiler will ‘top up’ the hot water to the desired temperature

Typically, mains fed water is heated from 6°C to 60°C by your boiler. Due to pre-heating by the solar panels, the water will typically reach temperatures in the range of 30°C to 45°C. This means that your boiler will be doing much less work saving on CO2 emissions and energy costs.

How much does Solar Thermal cost?

Costs will vary according to circumstances, such as how many occupants in your household and your daily hot water demands. Systems typically consist of 2 flat panels (or evacuated tube panels), sized to suit a hot water cylinder ranging from 200L to 300L. The prices for these systems typically range between £5,000 to £6,500.

What is a typical Solar Thermal system?

A typical system for a family of 4 will consist of:

  • 2 flat panels totalling around 3.5m2 in area
  • A 200L twin coil hot water storage cylinder
  • Pump station with pressure gauges and expansion vessel
  • A control unit

This ‘typical’ system would cut your water heating bills by up to 70% per year.

Note that this is usually a pressurised system providing mains pressure hot and cold water throughout your home. Some components of your existing system may need to be upgraded for mains pressure.

Is planning permission required for Solar Thermal Panels?

  • Planning permission is not usually required for roof mounted solar panels
  • Planning permission may be required in conservation areas; please check with your local authority
  • Solar roof panels are not generally allowed on listed buildings but other options may be available, please contact us for further information
