Solar Thermal panels use the sun's energy to indirectly heat the water in a hot water storage tank which then supplies your hot water taps, shower heads etc.
Typically, mains fed water is heated from 6°C to 60°C by your boiler. Due to pre-heating by the solar panels, the water will typically reach temperatures in the range of 30°C to 45°C. This means that your boiler will be doing much less work saving on CO2 emissions and energy costs.
Costs will vary according to circumstances, such as how many occupants in your household and your daily hot water demands. Systems typically consist of 2 flat panels (or evacuated tube panels), sized to suit a hot water cylinder ranging from 200L to 300L. The prices for these systems typically range between £5,000 to £6,500.
A typical system for a family of 4 will consist of:
This ‘typical’ system would cut your water heating bills by up to 70% per year.
Note that this is usually a pressurised system providing mains pressure hot and cold water throughout your home. Some components of your existing system may need to be upgraded for mains pressure.
